A couple of weeks ago, Mylife.com published their list of the most dangerous cities in America, stating their research showed Tulsa, Oklahoma to be the most dangerous city in the United States, and, for an extra bonus, the only other major city in Oklahoma, Oklahoma City, was ruled to be the second most dangerous.
I made a few jokes about the finding with my brother (who lives in saintly Colorado) and my father (who lives in rocking Austin, Texas). I blamed our helium production, our treatment of the Yield signs that our state offered to world back in 1936 as mere suggestions, and our guilt about the invention of aerosol cans that now destroy the ozone layer for the crazy crap people here are constantly doing.
Obviously, I don’t take that kind of stuff seriously, especially when it is gathered by an organization like Mylife.com aka Wink.com aka Reunion.com aka Classmates.com. Not one of those websites ever got my information right, and I have always been listed in the phone book. Why would I believe them about anything else?
Then, of course, we have a beheading not two weeks later, right here in the oft-forgotten state of Oklahoma, pretty much blowing everyone’s mind. This is a sentence no one ever expects to read:
Alton Nolen stabbed his coworker and cut her head off in the customer service center of Vaughn’s, a Moore Food Distribution Center.
No one here knows what to do with the constant assault of news media launching phrases and words we only ever hear when referring to the war in the Middle East or the attack on New York City during 911. Islam, beheading, local Muslims.…what the hell?! Moore has a population of about 6 people. I’m blown away they have even one “local Muslim”.
Our last big news story was how we botched a couple of executions, and the suffering of these convicted murders became a rally to arms against the death penalty in general. I have no opinion about this hot topic one way or another. Each side has some legitimate arguments, but I have my own crap to deal with these days. Safe bet is to just avoid murdering anyone if at all possible, like me.
I did get a twisted kick out of the headlines today, though.
I think there are crazy, mentally ill people everywhere, and I doubt Oklahoma has more than their fair share of them. But as a resident here for the last 11 years, the decline is pretty evident. Our middle class is disappearing, leaving a huge gap between the Haves and the Have-Nots. An ever-growing number of people who can’t make ends meet on the pathetic wages offered here have contributed to the need for some to turn to drugs and others to sell them those drugs. The drug business is booming.
Our police, for whatever politically correct reasons being spouted these days, are often just as guilty of breaking the law as those they arrest. A week never goes by we don’t hear about Tulsa’s Finest being arrested for something — murder, drunk driving, sex with an underage girl. It’s hard to feel safe when the people who are supposed to be keeping you safe, are victimizing people like all the rest of the criminal element.
I think it is a sad sign of the times that Oklahoma had its very own Islamic Beheading Situation in the customer service center of a grocery supply company located in the buckle of the Bible Belt.
It is even sadder that the state ghoulish-ly seized the opportunity to restart executions, striking while people were completely freaked out and distracted by this weirdo way to murder someone.
And most of all, I’m sad some Public Relations employee at BancFirst is thinking if it weren’t for bad luck, she’d have no luck at all.

Ps: For Holly, the moral of the story is:
First, this stuff can happen anywhere, even in Oklahoma.
Second, no matter how shocking and unexpected something is to us, the little people, the government is so detached from real people or real emotions, they will act in a completely expected weasle-like manner to get what they want, unapologetically using something this horrifying to sway public opinion by playing on their fear. This was a pretty douche-like move.
And lastly, that some self-congratulating bullshit news about a big company and a big governor giving food to the poor people only looks a million times more douche-like than it already is when it follows news about a Muslim beheading a woman at a customer service center in Oklahoma. And despite having no control over beheadings, government disconnect, or the lousy opinion people have about big businesses, specifically banks, some marketing specialist out there is going to be blamed for how badly this all went down for Bancfirst. You watch…

here are some of the original lyrics.
OOOOk-lahoma, where the wind comes sweepin’ down the plain,
And the wavin’ wheat can sure smell sweet, When the wind comes right behind the rainQ
OOOOk-lahoma, Ev’ry night my honey lamb and I, Sit alone and talk and watch a hawk makin’ lazy circles in the sky.
We know we belong to the land (yo-ho)
And the land we belong to is grand!
And when we say
Yeeow! Aye-yip-aye-yo-ee-ay!
We’re only sayin’
You’re doin’ fine, Oklahoma!
Oklahoma O.K.! – I DON’T THINK SO

lol. Here’s my rewrite:
OOOOk-lahoma, where the meth comes smuggled on the plane,
And the flashin’ lights don’t mean their right, Only that your wallet is about to drain
OOOOk-lahoma, Ev’ry night my news makes me cry, I sit alone, and afraid, and watch a helicopter makin’ lazy circles in the sky.
We know we belong to the land (yo-ho)
And the land we belong to is grand!
And when we say
Yeeow! Aye-yip-aye-yo-ee-ay!
We’re only sayin’
What the hell, Oklahoma?
Oklahoma is Not O.K.!

There is evil everywhere and it isn’t limited to any particular group of people. Muslim, mentally ill. Perfectly sane people are killing people all of the time. Believe it or not, people are decapitated all the time, we are just now throwing around “beheaded” thanks to the ISIS. That’s exactly what that is. One of our local domestic homicide’s that we had in 2012 ( on Christmas Eve ) featured a decapitation. Not as glamorous as beheaded.
That guy was perfectly sane, he was pissed, but sane. He was just some frumpy white guy. Strange that our local media didn’t jump all over that fact. They uncover skeletal remains often where they discover that the head was either missing or had been removed and tossed on top of the body. Again, decapitated doesn’t sound as fun as beheaded.
Thanks ISIS for the new phrase and for putting the idea in the back of everyone’s still attached heads.
I want to be clever and ask you to not let these incident’s cause you to lose yours. That probably wouldn’t come across as humor, just poor taste.
I’ve asked people who are older than me if the world is getting worse or if, due to the internet, we are just more aware of what’s going on in the world and they can’t really decide. We are very aware of what’s going on out there, more so than ever. Horrifying. I’ve thought about “unliking” the media sites on my Facebook because I get tired of the bad news and horrific events that are happening. I, as a human being, get weary of all of these things I can’t realistically do anything about.
Thanks to social media we also have news sources who feel like they can’t NOT have something to talk about so they spew out anything and everything just to fill in the time gaps on their news feeds. Anymore, it doesn’t even matter if it’s true or not. They’ll do their best to iron that out later.
Oy. This world.

I completely agree with you. I’ve read much more horrific stuff that people have done to other people. I went through a period of time when I was working at a law office where I read all these different appeals by people on death row. Even those brief run-downs of the facts on record were enough to terrify me completely. Even worse, these were usually sane people doing insane things. They usually started with “John Doe and his friend went to a store and picked up a six pack of beer” and ended with “dismembered the body and stuffed it into a suitcase”. I had to stop because it was making me completely freak out.
As for your joke in poor taste, I would have laughed my butt off. I can’t help it. Laughter is my stress reliever.
I hate the way the world is today. Hate it.

Oh and if you don’t believe me about the whole “people are being beheaded more often than you realize” do a Google search for “decapitated bodies found” and see for yourself. I actually did it after my response just now.
The first thing you’ll see if probably the incident in Mexico. I wonder how many Mexican Muslims there are? And the body in Wyoming?

I grew up along the border of Mexico. People have been being beheaded there for as long as I can remember. I know we here about it more often with the internet and all, but my opinion is that people are getting worse. Maybe it is the desensitizing we’ve been doing to generations of kids now. I don’t really know. I just know that there seems to be general air of desperation all around and it is hard to remain peaceful anymore.

That was just the big example that was closer to home. If you scroll though, it’s happened all over our country. Wyoming, Tennessee.. It isn’t just a problem of other countries. We’re doing it to ourselves too. The evil is everywhere.
I would feel perfectly safe walking the streets of Oklahoma City and Tulsa. I’m not just saying that because I live near Gary, Indiana either. Though, we do grow them tough up here. I would be more concerned walking around the city of South Bend, Indiana than I would Tulsa, any… day…of…the…..week.
